Reading comprehension among pupils at third grafe of elementary schools

The present thesis deals with the issue of reading comprehension of pupils in the 3rd grade of elementary school taught by the Sfumato reading method. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces the concepts of reading, some sub-skills for the development of reading comprehension. We also describe some reading methods used in Czech education, focusing more on the Sfumato reading method. The last chapter is devoted to a reflection on the influence of distance learning on the acquisition of reading by beginning readers. The practical section presents research whose primary aim was to describe the typical developmental level of reading 3rd grade students taught using the Sfumato reading method. The secondary aim was to compare the average performance of pupils of this method with the analytic-synthetic and genetic methods. The research sample consisted of 45 pupils of the 3rd grade of the Sfumato method from a total of 3 primary schools in the Czech Republic. The pupils were administered the PorTex diagnostic battery. The empirical part is divided into descriptive and analytical parts. Using authentic literary texts to develop reading skills in English at middle school level

This diploma thesis focuses on the usage of authentic literary texts in English teaching at middle school level. Authentic texts present a language input which helps natural language acquisition. The theoretical part is based on the description of conditions for language acquisition, types of authentic texts and a lesson procedure that deals with them. The practical part is realized through the lesson plan of three English lessons at middle school level. The aims of the lessons are to develop reading skills by using authentic texts and to support pupils' reading literacy.
Activities before reading, during reading and after reading when working with text in teaching literature in grades 6-9

This thesis deals with the before-, during- and after- reading activities when working with text in teaching literature in grades 6-9. The first part describes results from testing the critical literacy of Czech students in the PISA 2009 international comparison, as well as levels of critical literacy and its place in the Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education. The reasons for using these activities and examples of them are also discussed. In the practical part, I carried out research using questionnaires to find out if and how often teachers use these types of activities and I have provided examples of those used. Next I wanted to find out which types of readers the teachers use and how these readers contribute to a student's reading literacy development.
Using new teaching methods and educational strategies to support reading and reading literacy at the primary school.

This thesis deals with the use of innovative teaching methods and instructional strategies to support and develop literacy at the first grade of primary school. The theoretical part describes the changes in education related to curricular reform, also the change the objectives and the content of education towards the formation and development of key competencies, to prepare students for real life. This paper introduces the concept of contemporary Czech language and literature, its inclusion in the National Curriculum for Basic Education. The theoretical part focuses on the concept of literacy, reading literacy defined criteria. It also discusses the methods of critical thinking, which contribute to the development of reading skills. It also describes the course "Promoting literacy", which the author of the thesis completed in 2011. Using Children's Literature in Teaching English at Elementary Schools

of the thesis The dissertation thesis deals with the problem of using children's literature in teaching foreign languages at elementary schools. It frames the topic by Czech curricular documents and constituents of the teaching-learning process, provides a historical survey and lists the genres of the children's literature. It characterizes the skill of reading in foreign language teaching and deals with the position of the literary text and lesson planning with children's literature within the foreign language teaching process. Attention is also paid to children's literature as the constituent of the pre-service teacher training. The aim of the thesis is to find out whether children's literature is used in foreign language teaching at elementary schools, whether contemporary textbooks use it, how it is perceived by in-service and pre-service teachers and last but not least what children's literature in the teaching-learning process of foreign languages has to offer. Use of Lapbook to Develop Reading Pre-Literacy in Preschool Children

This diploma thesis deals with the Lapbook teaching method and its use to develop reading literacy for preschool-age children. The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the text read by children and their creation of their own interactive book. The work presents an integrative project that is to stimulate children's interest in literature, understanding the story through appropriately selected activities and get acquainted with the entire process of making a Lapbook. The work is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part characterizes in general reading literacy, reading pre-literacy and its anchoring in the Framework Educational Program for Preschool Education. Furthermore, the characteristics of the period in terms of the child's development and the development of reading skills, the factors influencing reading, such as the influence of family or kindergarten, and the prerequisites for the development of reading literacy. Supporting Reading of Pupils with Dyslexia in Secondary Schools

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of reading of the pupils with dyslexia and the possible support. It is focused on the methods of support and the strategies used by their teachers to develop reading of dyslectic pupils. In the first part, there is a theoretical definition of dyslexia, distinctive features of this diagnosis, diagnostic and education of dyslectic pupils. Further, reading is discussed from a theoretical viewpoint. These two aspects are interconnected and other factors like teaching, the teacher or the personality of the child come in. Then we deal with the methods that can help to improve the level of reading. The fundamental part is dedicated to the methods used for the support and positive influence on dyslectic pupils' reading. The thesis offers suggestions and inspiration for future and current teachers how to approximate reading to their dyslectic pupils. It also deals with some problems occurring in the profession.
